Logline

In a culture of betrayal, an innocent man is enticed by a neighbor to speak a forbidden prayer at a funeral. Within the walls of a Soviet prison, Jakob must discover if he can forgive the unforgiveable.

Synopsis

The Story Jakob Seel (Jeff Stewart of The Bill), a 60-year-old teacher living in the Soviet Union in 1938, struggles with a growing sense of worthlessness. When a neighbor asks Jakob to pray at her brother’s funeral, he agrees, even though he knows the government forbids it.

Jakob is arrested. Strangely, he begins to find purpose inside the prison walls, even under the heel of the sadistic warden: Nikolai (Christopher Elliott). Jakob slowly becomes aware of Nikolai’s long-standing vendetta against him. A deadly game of chess ensues. However, when Nikolai’s plans are thwarted, Jakob and the prisoners are left to digest their hollow victory. It is then that the man responsible for Jakob’s arrest arrives at the prison...

Based on a True Story

Inspired by a little-known ethnic people called the German-Russians who became victims of Soviet genocide. Though their fight against Kaiser and Fuehrer are largely forgotten, their memory lingers. This film depicts their plight in the 1930s USSR under the iron fist of Stalin.
