Meet the Beatles in the Off-Broadway Musical “Come Away”

The Minstrels
The Minstrels attempt to evade those adoring fans. (left to right: Aaron White, Ben Sumrall, Nathan Freeman,
& Chris Gilmer)

NEW YORK, NY :: May 1, 2005 :: It seems odd to associate the Beatles with the classical Jewish romance of Ruth! Yet, here they are: John, Paul, George, and... Pete?! (Remember him? Ardent Beatles fans will of course know him as the Fab Four’s drummer before Ringo). Come Away presents them as a time-traveling foursome.

Written by the Moon Brothers, and originally performed in Toronto, Canada at the National Ballet School Theatre, the show was hailed by Canada’s leading theatre magazine as “Broadway Bound.” This induced the writers to come stateside with this quirky, modern stage-musical. The show offers more than just something for Beatles enthusiasts.

The main plot revolves around a not-so-typical boy-meets-girl love story. The young widow Ruth (a modern-day Palestinian) leaves her native land of Moab to pledge loyalty to her aging Jewish mother-in-law. In turn, Naomi becomes a matchmaker for Ruth and the kind, handsome landowner, Boaz... proving that if such a pair could get along then, maybe there’s hope today for peace, not only in the Middle East, but in the world beyond.

So where do the Beatles actually fit in? Billed as "The Minstrels", they find themselves in the employ of the story’s hero, Boaz. In this version, they are the narrative device to move the story along, while also playing into the story’s final resolution.

The American premiere of 'Come Away' is being presented by CubeCity Entertainment, Inc. in a workshop on May 6-8, 2005 in New York City. It is directed by Roberto Muñoz, with choreography by Mandi Bedbury. Performances will be held at the Producers Club, 358 W. 44th Street, between 8 & 9 Avenues, just steps away from Times Square. For tickets, call SmartTix at 212-868-4444.

The Story of Job: A Metaphor for 9/11...?

'Job', played by Troy Kurtis; 'Satan' played by Dale Church; and 'Job's Wife' played by Stacy Salvette NEW YORK, NY :: Sep 6, 2004 :: On September 11, 2001, New York City faced its own tragic “Job experience”. The city was hit hard; the question remains will it regain its former prominence, ultimately to be vindicated as was “JOB,” that ancient paragon of virtue and strength.

Now in the calm of some years after to help us reflect on the meaning of that tragedy, comes the musical Job and the Snake. While at first its theme of suffering might seem an unusual choice for a musical, its unusually entertaining format delivers not only relief from life’s ongoing difficulties, but it promises hope for the future. From Job’s poignant ballads to the entertaining pieces of his so-called comforters, this musical strives to live up to its original critique as a “potential masterpiece”.

The New York City showcase of the musical 'Job and the Snake' will be held on Friday, October 8th (8:00pm) & Saturday, October 9th (2:00pm) at Calvary Theatre, 123 W. 57th Street in Manhattan. The show is being produced by CubeCity Entertainment, Inc. starring Guiding Light’s Troy Kurtis in the title role of Job. The show is directed by Robert Munoz. PRESS RELEASE

Former Menudo Singer in NYC Musical Showcase of “Job and the Snake”

Job, played by Troy Kurtis

NEW YORK, NY :: August 31, 2004 :: Menudo: The stepping stone for Ricky Martin and Robi Rosa. And now here's another member of the Latin singing sensation, singing his way into New York’s musical theatre scene...

Meet Troy Kurtis, starring in the NYC premier for the musical 'Job and the Snake'. Troy is no stranger to the spotlight. He spent a year on CBS’s Guiding Light in the role of “Nico”. And as a former lead vocalist of Menudo, Troy is ideal to take on the singing challenges demanded by the lead role of Job.

The musical, Job and the Snake, was originally created in Canada by the Moon Brothers. While in Canada, it was performed in Toronto at Canada’s National Ballet School Theatre. Finally, it is coming to the New York City theatre scene, hoping to revisit its initial critical acclaim that dubbed it as a “potential masterpiece”.

'Job and the Snake' is the classical-spiritual story of good versus evil. In the wake of the success of Mel Gibson’s Passion, this may be the most opportune time for another spiritual classic to take center stage. Grammy award-winner recording engineer Mike Scott (for Mariah Carey) has already expressed an interest in re-recording the NYC cast soundtrack of the musical.

The showcase presentation of 'Job and the Snake', featuring a cast of 40, will be held on October 8 & 9, 2004 at Calvary Theatre, 123 W. 57th Street in Manhattan. The show is being produced by CubeCity Entertainment, Inc. and directed by Roberto Munoz. For ticket information, call SmartTix at 212-868-4444.
