The Lamb’s Closes its Doors for New Hotel
The Lamb’s Theatre, once hosting such icons as Mark Twain and Fred Astaire, also played host to many Off-Broadway theatre shows, including a staging of what would become CubeCity’s first independent feature film project, Liars and Lunatics
NEW YORK, NY :: March 9, 2007 :: Walk down W.44th Street in Manhattan, past the old Lamb’s building, and you notice a strange hush. Strange because you’re only half a block from a lively Times Square. Last fall, the Lamb’s theatre space officially had to close its doors, to make way for a new hotel development moving in.
In its glory-day in the early 1900s, the building belonged to the Lambs Club. It boasted of such members as Fred Astaire, Irving Berlin, and John and Lionel Barrymore (For a full list, visit www.the-lambs.org). Oh yes, and Mark Twain used to spin tales by the grand fireplace on the first floor.
But times changed, and in the 1970s the Lambs building traded hands. It now housed the Church of the Nazarene. The building still kept the tradition of theatre with presentations of Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway shows in their Main Theatre Space. But the cost of keeping such prime real estate near Times Square took its toll. At the turn of the new millennium, a hotel chain was interested in the property. Finally, 2006 marked the official handover.
The farewells have been said… But the many memories are still there. Six years ago, the Lamb’s main stage played host to CubeCity’s New York City Off-Broadway theatre debut. The performance showcased the Moon Brothers musical “Purim Day,” featuring former Miss New York City, Amy Bartlett, in the leading role of Esther. Later, in May 2003, CubeCity would present a three-week run of the musical “Epimenides”. The writers even staged one of the first performances of “The Trial,” the play that would become the independent feature film “Liars and Lunatics.”
The German literary scholar, Goethe, once observed that “Daring ideas are like chessmen moved forward. They may be beaten, but they may start a winning game.” CubeCity salutes the past—with special thanks to all those at the Lamb’s for their part in making those showcases and theatre workshops possible.
But as each 'chess piece' is moved, new initiatives are tested out. For CubeCity, this has meant expansion from doing “just theatre” to the development of independent film productions.
