Language of FilmmakingA Short Glossary of Film TermsBEST BOY Refers to the person who aids either the Gaffer, or the Key Grip. The best boy can be either male or female. BOOM The long pole that ends the microphone and allows for microphone placement close to the action without being visible in the frame. "Boom" can also refer to the Boom Operator. BUSINESS Any specific action performed by an actor on camera (eg: flipping through a newspaper, sharpening a knife, petting a dog, etc.) CLOSED SET Only essential personnel are on set for filming a shot. Usually for shooting sensitive scenes where an actor might feel vulnerable. CUT AWAY A close up of an object, a gesture, or an element of the environment that is in some way connected with the overall scene or event. DEEP FOCUS A focus in which all objects from close foreground to distant background are in sharp definition. FILTERED Voice coming over a phone, radio, etc. GAFFER Electrician on a film set. GRIP An all-around physical laborer, helps moves equipment or lights. A grip who specializes in working with track and a dolly for refraining shots is sometimes called a Dolly Grip. LOGLINE A one or two sentence summary of your screenplay which is designed to intrigue someone enough to want to read it. MOS "Mit Out Sound" or "Mute on Slate". A scene is MOS when the images are captured by the camera, but dialogue or sound is not recorded. PICTURE LOCK When you’re happy with the picture edit, you “lock” the picture so that you work on the soundtrack. PLOT POINT A turning point, or transition in the screenplay that propels the screenplay forward. RACK FOCUS Moving the focus control of the camera in one continuous motion so that one object goes out of focus as a closer or farther object comes into focus. Also called Follow Focus. VIDEO VILLAGE The area set aside for the director, producer, script supervisor, etc. Here they get to watch a monitor with a video feed from the camera so they can see what is happening in the shot without getting in the way of the crew. WILD SOUNDS Recordings made of sound without a corresponding sync image. |
