INTERVIEW
Q&A :: Maya Serhan
On her role as Paige in "Dear J"...
Q: When did you discover acting is what you wanted to do?
A: I was always drawn to performing since I was a young girl. But it wasn't until I was 17, living in Beirut, that I realized that I wanted to make it a career. And so I came to New York City.Q: What did you think when you first read the script?
A: I thought it was different than a lot of stuff out there; I found the subject matter very interesting.Q: What attracted you to working on this film?
A: Since I was a little girl, I have always been in conflict with myself in regards to religion. I thought it would be interesting to see how it would affect me on a personal level.Q: What drew you to the character of Paige?
A: The fact that she questions everything and will not have her beliefs dictated to her.Q: What aspects of Paige can you identify with?
A: Paige is a strong determined woman who also has a child-like, playful quality about her—which I can identify with.Q: What has it been like working with this cast?
A: Funny times with such characters!Q: What did you enjoy the most about working on this film?
A: Every project is a learning process, and it's a joy to wake up every morning and be creative. It's fun.
Q: What was the most challenging scene for you?
A: The scene when I place Jay on the stand and force him to question God and then I challenge his beliefs. That scene was shot in a church, a place of God, and even though I am not religious, part of me felt blasphemous. Had the conversation taken place in a kitchen or elsewhere, it would have felt less intense.{{ photo :: Joseph Halsey and Maya Serhan go over their dialogue before filming the final courtroom scene. }}
Q: Do you have any funny stories or anecdotes about working on the film?
A: Oh, I'll just keep quiet!Q: What “lesson from mom” do you still live by today?
A: My mom always said, "whenever something gets you down, cry it out, wash your face, put on some lipstick and walk out the door looking fabulous!" (although not sure how well that's worked for me...) But I still live by it.Q: What’s the craziest thing you have done?
A: Willingly jumping off a mountain top in Rio de Janeiro—hand-gliding. It was a thrill.>> Back to Meet the Cast
