Q&A :: Allison Lane

On her role as Dr. Frolick in the film "Dear J"...

Q: How did you get your start in film?
A: Well, I’ve been acting ever since I was a young girl, but about 2 years ago, I discovered my passion for the world of filmmaking. I have done over 50 projects in film and television since then. Though I will always love the stage, the art of filmmaking is one of the most wondrous things I’ve ever known.

Q: What did you think when you first read the script?
A: I really enjoyed the fact that you think you know who the characters are—firm in their beliefs—and then everything is questioned. No one is exactly who they appear to be.

Q: What attracted you to this film?
A: I am partly attracted to the nuttiness of the film and also the way in which it is grounded.

Q: How do you choose which roles you accept?
A: There has to be something about the role that excites me, something that makes me want to come to work and feel like its play.

Q: What drew you to the character of Dr. Frolick?
Here is a woman that you think you know, but there is a whole world going on inside of her that she rarely lets out. I think it's so interesting to have two people who are diametrically opposed in their belief systems (James ad Frolick), who are starting to question everything, and maybe...to fall in love.

Q: Do you identify with her character?
A: I think we all have one face that we show to the world and another that is very private. Or maybe that’s just me!

Joseph A. Halsey and Allison Lane having some fun on the ladder Q: Tell about working on the film.
A: It was great fun. I loved letting out some of Frolick’s quirks in the courtroom. The directors really let me play, which was such fun... Just a lot of camaraderie on set. Everybody was hilarious.

Q: What was your favorite scene in the film?
A: My favorite scene was probably the last one with James and Frolick. The utter release of it—the culmination of so many different elements. I also think its just a beautiful moment of sharing between people.

Q: What about the most challenging scene?
A: Probably the ladder scene with Staples. While it is a simple moment, it is a very important one and we were having technical difficulties. But to me, challenges are always fun.

Q: Who is your favorite character in the film?
A: James. He is endlessly fascinating to me. But I also adored the character of Staples, because he is frankly the only one who really has it together.

Q: Who or what gives you inspiration as an actor?
A: Anything that is creatively at its fullest potential, whether that be watching Phillip Seymore Hoffman (in any film ever) or observing nature in YellowStone National Park.
