judge in the jury box

Karen Lynn Gorney, who plays the role of the Judge in the courtroom scenes, couldn’t make the read-through of the script. The reason? She couldn’t get out of jury duty.

James and Paige dally in the rain at Flushing Meadows Park

look! free rain...

The weather forecast predicted sprinkles of rain for the Friday morning we were to shoot the outdoor scenes at Flushing Meadows Park. By the time we arrived, the weather had turned sour. We saw another film crew pack up their equipment and leave. Not us. It was raining cats and dogs, but we filmed anyway. Umbrellas and raincoats protected the camera. The actors, Joe and Maya (role of James and Paige) were great sports about dallying in the rain. Good thing we didn’t have to worry about sound! Later, we discovered that a tornado had touched down not too far from where we were filming. Come to think of it, that must have been why the sky was a sickly green color!

it's a bird, it's a plane...

The majority of shooting took place near New York City’s LaGuardia Airport. This meant the sound people were constantly plagued by overhead airplanes on practically every take. On the date that we were scheduled to film upstate, everyone was relieved that we wouldn't have to deal the sound of planes; but the peace wouldn't last for long. Now we were faced with a chorus of barking dogs!

Cast and Crew playing backgammon

backgammon anybody?

Backgammon was the game of choice as the cast and crew waited between takes. The reason? Bruce Nicholls (Philosopher Hume) wanted to get into the role since his character has an obsession with the board game. The rest of cast and crew were only too happy to join in...

no parking

It was August, right before the U.S. Open was to start. We were scheduled to film on the grounds surrounding the tennis stadium on the day before the competition. We had all the paperwork, but had not requested parking passes since the park has several free parking lots. However, due to the heightened security of the U.S. Open, it turned out that the parking lot that we had chosen happened to be occupied as the temporary headquarters of the New York Police Department! With a little persuasion—and due to the fact that we did have the necessary paperwork to shoot at the park—the police finally granted our small skeleton crew permission to park among the cruisers.

call the police!

We were in the middle of a scene when suddenly we heard the buzzing of a weed-whacker. The lawn care people had decided it was time to cut the grass. Who should we send to ask them to come back at a later time? Since we were doing the courtroom scenes, we sent the Bailiff... That did the trick. After all, who would want to cross a six-foot guy wearing a "police" uniform?
